Scott Brown for Senate, Old and New Business

Sunday, January 17, 2010

Latest Sharf-for-Colorado Newsletter:
Dear Friends and Supporters,

Scott Brown for Senate

What does Scott Brown have to do with House District 6? Proving that old definitions of a "winnable" district don't apply. It would prove that any district is winnable, and that no Democrat's seat is safe this year.

A victory in Massachusetts would not only send shockwaves through the political world, it would help stop ObamaCare in its tracks and restore the filibuster. It would force the Democrats to spend the little time they have left in the majority in Congress taking into account the majority of the country.

Right now, the State Republican Party has put out a call for volunteers to help with the telephone GOTV efforts. If you can help for three hours in the next week, email matt@cologop.org, and they'll set you up with a call-from-home system.

And let them know that the Sharf Campaign sent you!

Old Business

The last month has been a busy one, as our campaign has developed a strategy for making the most of caucus night, and as I help the County Party reach out to its members and Denver's voters.
  • We had a tremendously successful kickoff event - check out the pictures on the campaign's Facebook page!
  • I had a chance to meet members of As A Mom, a grass-roots group dedicated to traditional American, faith-based principles, as they held caucus training at the Denver HQ.
  • We've been working with our other Denver candidates (Danny Stroud, Christine Mastin, and C.J. Garbo) to help ensure all of our success in the fall.
  • I've continued my role as producer on Backbone Radio, and begun preparing for a new monthly feature I'll be hosting, Backbone Business.
  • Last night, I attended the House pre-session event, one of the most packed, most successful such events in memory.

New Business

With the turn of the calendar, the pace really begins to pick up.
  • Next Tuesday, I'll be at Cindy Acree's Health Care Rally at the Capitol at lunchtime. Join me there, and let's make sure that our Senators, Congressmen, and state legislature all know that we want more freedom and choice in our health care, not prescription-by-bureaucrat.
  • On Thursday night, January 21, HD-6 will hold a joint meeting with HD-3 and HD-9 featuring our US Senate candidates. It'll be at 7:00pm at Central Christian Church.
  • I'll be participating in two caucus trainings, one at Windsor Gardens on Tuesday, February 16, and one at the regular HD-6 February Meeting, on the 18th, again at Central Christian Church. Both will be at 7:00pm. If you haven't been to caucuses before, or if you just want a refresher, join us there.

Contact With You
  • The key issues of this campaign will be jobs, the economy, education, and energy. Watch for campaign planks as they start to roll out at SharfColorado.com!
  • You can now receive blog updates by email, as well. Please drop by View From a Height and register for email updates as I post on the blog; it'll help you get to know me, and hopefully, pass along some useful information and insight about the upcoming legislative session.
Please remember, our campaign can only be effective if we can reach our voters here in HD-6, and get our message of freedom and prosperity out to them. Any contribution you make goes directly to that end. Please contribute whatever you can, and any amount is a lot.

Thank you to all of you who have helped thus far, all of you who have offered to help, and I look forward to once again earning your support during this most promising election cycle for Colorado Republicans, for Denver Republicans, and for House District 6.

Joshua

Happy Thanksgiving!

Sharf Family heirloom Thanksgiving centerpiece Happy Thanksgiving!

In the midst of political rough-and-tumble, it's easy to forget how much we have to be thankful for in this great country of ours, and in our beautiful state of Colorado. While our economic times are tough, we have seen worse, and this too shall pass. Most of us still pass our lives in comfort that would have been unimaginable even a century ago.

Of course, our material comforts are the least of it. We live in a land of unparallelled freedom and opportunity, where people of all faiths live as equal citizens. And while some of us, for the first time, believe those freedoms to be in serious danger, their proper and vigorous exercise is their own best defense.

As Warren Buffet put it, to be an American citizen is to have held the winning tickets in life's lottery. Let's give thanks for our good fortune, and for the opportunity to help others around the world secure it for themselves, as well.

This past week was a busy one. I had the chance to address the Windsor Gardens Republican Club on my candidacy and our hopes for the district and Colorado. On Friday, I attended the RNC's Hispanic Outreach seminar, which underlined the importance of this growing segment of our population. And I was honored to deliver the invocation at the Colorado Republican Business Coalition's monthly meeting later that day. Kudos to Christine Burtt and the CRBC for producing a Powerpoint briefing explaining how to apply economic principles to public policy. Look for a presentation near you soon. And on Tuesday, I was fortunate to see some aspiring high school students perform at the YMCA's model legislative session at the Capitol.

Please continue to follow my campaign and other news of note at my blog, View From a Height, at jsharf.com/view.

This upcoming week will be no less busy. We hope that you will join us at the Sharf Campaign Launch (Wednesday, December 2, at the new Denver County Republican Headquarters at 1000 North Speer) for some hors d'oeuvres, desserts, politics and shmoozing. We're pleased to announce that along with our hosting committee of State Party Chairman, Dick Wadhams, State Senators Nancy Spence and Greg Brophy, former US Representative, Bob Schaffer, former Colorado State Treasurer, Mark Hillman, candidate for Secretary of State, Scott Gessler, and Longmont City Councilman, Katie Witt, candidate for State Treasurer, J.J. Ament will join us, as well as Clear the Bench Colorado's Matt Arnold. And don't forget to bring your elephant for our BYOE contest, because we will be awarding a fabulous prize for the best elephant! Rules for the BYOE contest and other details about the Campaign Launch can be found at SharfColorado.com/campaignlaunch. Please RSVP to either events@SharfColorado.com or on our Facebook event page.

Denver Republicans and the Hispanic Community
Wednesday, October 28, 2009

From "View From a Height." Original blog post here.

The Virginia GOP's ability to adapt is one reason it's getting ready to mop the floor with the Virginia Democrats in less than a week. If the Colorado party is going to do the same, it's going to have to do the same. Which is one reason that it's cool to see the party attracting the Hispanic community.

Right now, the Denver party's 2nd Vice Chairman is Frank Tijerina, and I learned just last night that Edgar Antillon is running in HD-35 this cycle. Add to that recently announced Robert Ramirez in Westminster's HD-29, and it's clear that the party will have a more Hispanic face in the future. Frank's is high-powered, and I look forward to working with him here in Denver.

Edgar was actually pretty funny, stepping up to the platform and starting his speech in Spanish, only to interrupt himself, with "Just kidding." Brought everyone up short with a good laugh. I'm not a fan of identity politics per se, but Edgar's running as a Republican who also is Hispanic, not as a Hispanic who happens to be a Republican, and that really makes all the difference.

Joshua Sharf Announces His Candidacy for House District 6
Joshua Sharf Thursday, October 15, 2009

On Thursday, October 15, I announced my candidacy for State House District 6.

I'm running because I know that Colorado can do better than we have been, and that our district's representation in the State House of Representatives needs to be a part of that improvement.

House District 6 is a relatively prosperous district. But even past success isn't enough to guarantee the future. Coloradoans are worried about losing control over their futures, futures which that have worked hard to build. We can work to give them back that control.

Colorado has the resources - most importantly, our people - that can lead us back out. We need to unleash those resources to their full potential.

I hope you'll be able to join me as I walk the district, knock on doors, and discuss how to get the state moving in the right direction again. Please continue to check back at this website.

The work ahead won't be easy, but together, we can succeed, both as a campaign and more importantly, as a state.

See you on the trail,

Joshua
